 J6 / J7 Ski Season 2011-2012

We call ourselves the Mini Mites. The Mini Mites are J6 & J7's, which includes kids age 6-8 years old (YOB 2005-2003). This youngest group of athletes focuses primarily on developing skiing fundamentals for a good racing foundation, having fun, and introducing the kids to the sport of ski racing.

The team will get together once during the early season for a day of skiing and a parent meeting. This program officially begins with Christmas Camp and ends late in March. Our "Mini Mite" program includes skiing on Wednesday, Thursday from 4:00-6:00 and Friday Night from 6:30-8:30 at the Little Ski Hill and on Saturday, Sunday from 9:30 -12:30 at Brundage Mountain.

As part of the introduction to racing, we encourage all our Mini Mites to participate in our 2 home races. All of our kids need to have a USSA license. See "Licensing" section below. There are two away races mentioned on the calendar, but these are purely optional. We do not expect these athletes to travel, but mention them for those looking for more opportunities. Fun and fundamentals are key and we focus on these all year long.

Program Cost: $450

Boydstun-Hovdey Ski Heritage Scholarship available.

Note: The scholarship can cover coaching fees, season passes, and equipment.

 Equipment Reminders
For when we hit the slopes, we want to mention a few important equipment reminders:

- Dress for the conditions.
- Make sure the kids have warmups, neck warmers,
mittens/gloves, and as many layers as they need to be warm. We can always take layers off.
- We highly recommend that every child invest in hot packs (hand warmer packs) for their gloves or mittens. Stick a couple in their jacket every training day.....it may be warm, but if they take a good roll in the snow any wet hand will get cold. All J6& J7 coaches will carry a supply, but on a tough day we can go through plenty.
- Make sure the kids have warm and dry socks at the beginning of the day.
- Every child is expected to wear a helmet to practice with full ear protection and to have ski poles.
- If pulling skis out from last season, check to make sure they have some wax on them.
- Once we get into the season, there will be times we stop for a hot coco. It would be appreciated if the kids have $2 in their pocket if you are okay with them having some. (Likewise, if there are any health concerns at all, please let Bob or Nancy know.)

These few keys will help to make the even more fun for the kids. Looking forward to seeing you on the hill.

J6 & J7 Ski Sizing Information

40-50lbs 110cm
50-60lbs 120cm
60-70lbs 130cm (please discuss with coach)

In general, it is uncommon for a J7/J6 racer to ski on a length of 130cm. The intent is that these guidelines would give an athlete a ski that would stand next to him between his nose and his eyebrows. He would use 1 pair of skis for both Slalom and Giant Slalom. If you have any questions, send an email to me at nu_giles@yahoo.com.

 USSA Licensing

All Mini Mites of MSRT are required to be licensed by USSA.  The team is covered by USSA liability and to ensure coverage every member must be licensed.  The Youth Competitor license qualifies our J6 and J7 athletes to participate in USSA events.  This license is an entry-level , non-scored membership designed for athletes 12 years old and younger (based on December 31 age).  USSA youth competitor membership allows participation in selected divisional or state competitions, but is not scored on USSA ranking lists.

October 15th is the deadline for USSA membership renewal (http://my.ussa.org/) , with a late fee applied if late.  For all new athletes, it is highly important that the license is applied for before the Christmas Camp

J6 and J7 athletes wishing to participate in USSA events also need to have their IMD youth membership.  The USSA Youth Competitor license is $70 and the IMD youth membership is $20.  These are both processed on the same section of the application which needs to be submitted to USSA.

For more information and application for USSA and IMD membership go to http://my.ussa.org/.  The necessary forms can be found under Programs.  You are needing to complete the Youth Competitor section.  Remember to sign the liability release.
